July 28 Was the Biggest News Day of 2026: Google AI Labels, ChatGPT Bidding, and the EU AI Act Deadline
VM
VM Era TeamPublished on Jul 28, 2026
If you blinked on July 28, 2026, you missed the single most consequential news day for digital advertisers this year.
Three massive things happened simultaneously:
Google rolled out mandatory AI content labels across every advertising platform — Google Ads, Display & Video 360, Campaign Manager 360, Merchant Center, and Ads Editor.
ChatGPT Ads added conversion bidding, geo-exclusions, and bulk campaign tools — finally making it a real performance channel.
The EU AI Act Article 50 deadline is August 2 — five days from today. Every advertiser targeting EU markets needs to be compliant or risk penalties.
Here's everything you need to know about each change — and what to do before the week ends.
1. Google AI Labels: What Changed on July 28
Google officially rolled out AI content labels across its entire advertising ecosystem. Advertisers can now add text or visual AI labels directly to eligible image and video creatives, or enable a new AI label setting within Google's platforms.
The setting is rolling out across: Google Ads, Display & Video 360, Campaign Manager 360, Merchant Center, and Google Ads Editor.
Key details:
Advertisers can add AI labels manually or enable automatic labeling
Google may also auto-label assets created with its own AI tools
These labels won't violate Google's existing policies that prohibit text overlays or watermarks
PPC specialists have already spotted the rollout — a new "AI Label" column indicates whether labeling has been enabled in affected accounts
Ads using labeled assets display an AI disclosure icon wherever they appear
This is not optional. If your ads use AI-generated or AI-edited imagery, you need to label them.
Why This Is Happening
The driver is regulatory. The EU AI Act Article 50 takes effect August 2, 2026, requiring transparency on AI-generated content. Similar laws are coming in India and New York.
Google's existing image asset policy prohibited text overlays on ad creatives. That created a direct conflict: advertisers legally required to label AI content couldn't comply without violating platform policy. The AI label exemption resolves that conflict.
Google explicitly states that using the label setting alone does not guarantee regulatory compliance. The obligation sits with the advertiser. If you're running ads in the EU, India, or New York, consult legal counsel.
2. ChatGPT Ads Just Became a Real Performance Channel
On the same day, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads now supports conversion-based bidding, geo-exclusions, and bulk campaign tools. Here's what each means:
Conversion-Based Bidding
Instead of optimizing for impressions or clicks, ChatGPT can now optimize for actual sales and conversions using tracking pixels placed across your website. The system learns which users and placements are more likely to produce meaningful actions — purchases, signups, bookings — and allocates budget accordingly.
This is the feature that makes ChatGPT a real performance channel, not just an experimental platform.
Geo-Exclusions
Advertisers can now concentrate or exclude spending by geography. Previously limited to the US only, this opens up global campaigns with proper targeting controls.
Bulk Campaign Tools
APIs and bulk uploads for managing campaigns at scale. If you're running multiple products or segments, you no longer need to set up each campaign manually.
Also: ChatGPT Now Accesses Yelp Data
In a related move, ChatGPT gained access to Yelp reviews, ratings, and photos. This means AI answers about local businesses now pull directly from Yelp's verified review database. For local businesses, managing your Yelp reputation just became an AI visibility strategy.
3. The EU AI Act: 5 Days to Compliance
Article 50 of the EU AI Act takes effect August 2, 2026. Here's what it requires:
Any AI-generated or AI-modified content must be clearly labeled
This applies to all ad creatives (images, video, text) generated or substantially modified using AI
The obligation applies to the advertiser, not the platform
Penalties for non-compliance can be significant under EU data protection frameworks
If you run ads in the EU or to EU-based audiences, you need to have AI labeling processes in place by August 2. Google's new labeling tools make this easier, but the responsibility is yours.
What Counts as "AI-Generated"?
This is where it gets nuanced. According to the European Commission's implementation guidelines published this month:
Images entirely generated by AI (Midjourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly): must be labeled
Images substantially modified by AI (AI upscaling, background removal, subject replacement): must be labeled
Minor AI edits (auto-brightness, auto-crop, noise reduction): likely exempt
AI-generated ad copy: must be labeled if the consumer would reasonably believe a human wrote it
When in doubt, label it.
Why These Three Stories Connect
July 28 wasn't three separate news days. It was one story with three dimensions:
Regulation is forcing transparency. The EU AI Act, India's IT rules, and New York's AI disclosure law are all converging. Every major platform is building compliance tools because they have to.
AI ad platforms are maturing. ChatGPT Ads with conversion bidding isn't experimental anymore. It's a real channel competing with Google and Meta for performance ad spend.
The window for early adoption is closing. Google AI labels go from optional to effectively mandatory. ChatGPT Ads goes from experimental to performance-ready. The advertisers who act now get a head start; the ones who wait scramble.
July 28 was the day AI advertising stopped being a future trend and became a present-day operation. Three years from now, we'll look back at this week as the moment the industry crossed the Rubicon. The question isn't whether your business is ready for AI-labeled, AI-targeted, AI-optimized advertising. The question is whether you'll be ready by Monday.
What To Do This Week
Enable AI labeling. Go into your Google Ads account, check the new AI Label column, and make sure your AI-generated creative is labeled. If you're targeting the EU, this is not optional.
Audit your creative workflow. Document which assets are AI-generated, which are human-made, and which use AI as a minor editing tool. This documentation is your compliance paper trail.
Set up ChatGPT conversion tracking. Install the tracking pixel on your website and create a test campaign. Start gathering data now while competition is low.
Review your Yelp business profile. With ChatGPT now pulling Yelp data, your Yelp reviews directly influence what AI assistants recommend. Respond to reviews, update photos, and keep information current.
Consult legal compliance. If you're running ads in EU markets, get legal advice on your AI content disclosure obligations under Article 50.
This Is the Week That Defines 2026
August 2 isn't just a compliance deadline. It's the moment AI transparency shifts from voluntary to mandatory. And July 28 was the day the industry got the tools to make it happen.
The platforms have done their part. Now it's up to advertisers to act.
The winners in 2026 won't be the brands with the biggest budgets. They'll be the ones who move fastest to adapt. If you haven't started your AI labeling compliance, set up your ChatGPT campaigns, and reviewed your local AI visibility strategy, this week is the deadline.
