95% of B2B Marketers Use AI, But Only 39% See Results

Nearly every B2B marketing team now has AI in its stack. Almost none of them have figured out how to make it work.

That’s the central finding of the Content Marketing Institute’s 2026 B2B research, which reports 95% of B2B marketers using AI applications in some part of their workflow, while only around 39% say it is actually improving performance.

The gap is the headline. And for demand generation, content operations, and marketing leadership teams evaluating how to allocate budget and headcount, it raises a pointed question: if universal adoption is producing thin results, where is the real leverage in B2B content right now?

AI Adoption Is Universal. AI Results Are Not.

When CMI asked where marketers are increasing spend in 2026, AI tools led at 45%. But the same data makes clear that ownership of a tool does not translate to performance. Fewer than four in ten teams report a measurable lift.

What is working, according to Salesforce’s 2026 State of Marketing research, is deploying AI inside tightly scoped workflows rather than as a content generation machine. B2B teams running AI-assisted SDR or content distribution workflows saw a 38% drop in cost-per-lead and an increase in meetings booked per rep.

That is a fundamentally different use case than generating more blog posts.

The Buying Committee Got Bigger

While AI adoption debates dominate marketing conference agendas, a quieter structural shift is making B2B content strategy harder at its core. The average buying committee for deals exceeding $50,000 has grown to 11.2 stakeholders, up from 9.7 just two years earlier.

Compounding that challenge is how far along buyers are before they surface to sales. CMI’s 2026 data puts the average number of content pieces a B2B buyer reviews before contacting a vendor at 13.4, with roughly 67% of the decision journey happening without any direct vendor interaction.

For content teams, this means the work product is doing most of the actual selling, well before a sales development rep enters the picture.

Thought Leadership Is Everywhere. Advanced Programs Are Not.

Ninety-six percent of B2B brands now produce some form of thought leadership content. The saturation is real. But only roughly 4 to 11% of those programs rate themselves as advanced or leading, depending on the measurement methodology.

The implication: most thought leadership content is commodity. It says the same things, uses the same frameworks, and cites the same sources. The brands that break through are the ones with original data, specific examples, and a point of view that could only come from having done the work.

What’s Actually Working in 2026

Based on the CMI, Salesforce, and Forrester data, here’s where B2B teams are seeing real results:

The AI Productivity Paradox

Here’s the paradox at the heart of B2B marketing in 2026: AI tools are saving teams 10-14 hours per week. Productivity has increased. But performance — measured as actual business outcomes — hasn’t kept pace.

The reason is simple: AI makes it easier to produce content, but easier to produce does not mean easier to succeed. When everyone can generate 10x more content, the bar for quality, originality, and strategic relevance goes up, not down.

The teams winning in 2026 aren’t the ones producing the most AI-generated content. They’re the ones using AI to:

  1. Automate repetitive workflows (SDR research, content distribution, reporting)
  2. Free up human time for strategy, original research, and relationship building
  3. Personalize at scale without sacrificing quality

What To Do With This Data

95% of B2B marketers use AI. Only 39% see results. The difference isn’t the tool — it’s how you use it. AI-assisted workflows drive measurable outcomes. AI-generated content drives volume. Know the difference.
